Four High School Grads from Halton Awarded $10,000 in Scholarships

Oakville, ON, May 12, 2015 – Four $2,500 scholarships were awarded to students from Oakville and Burlington high schools on Monday afternoon by The Oakville, Milton and District Real Estate Board.

The award recipients were Leslie Ashworth (Halton District School Board E-Learning), Ian Berlot-Atwell (St. Ignatius of Loyola), Rachel Culver (St. Thomas Aquinas), and Rachel MacMurchy (Thomas A. Blakelock).

The four students were selected based on their written essay on one of three topics associated with the Nanny Angel Network and the REALTORS Care® Foundation. The topics included describing the impact a critical illness has on families, what resources may be required to provide more assistance to a family dealing with a critical illness, and what new initiatives can their school or community undertake to help fellow students who have shelter-based needs.

“The four graduating students that were selected have demonstrated a drive and passion to excel inside and outside of their classroom,” said Jeff Mahannah, President of The Oakville, Milton and District Real Estate Board.

“They’ve entered an essay based on the health and wellness of their community. Their thought-provoking and emotional essays had a profound impact on our panel of judges,” added Mahannah. “We are truly fortunate to have these bright young people among us.”

The Nanny Angel Network is a registered charity and the only organization of its kind in North America to provide free in-home childcare support for mothers who have been diagnosed with cancer, those requiring palliative care and for families requiring additional relief during the bereavement period.

The REALTORS Care® Foundation defines shelter as a refuge, haven or protection that provides or improves quality of life from hunger, the elements, physical/psychological abuse, disabilities and illness.
